Aluminium angle is the profile people reach for first: a simple L-section that bolts, rivets or welds into brackets, frames, edging and supports. It is light, it does not rust, and it cuts and drills with ordinary workshop tools. The only real question is which one to order — and that comes down to three numbers and one honest caveat.
How aluminium angle is described
Every angle is given as leg × leg × thickness, in millimetres. A 50 × 50 × 3mm angle has two equal 50mm legs and a 3mm wall. A 100 × 50 × 3mm is an unequal angle: one leg is twice the other.
- Equal angle — the same on both faces. The default for brackets, corner trim, frames and anything symmetrical.
- Unequal angle — one long leg, one short. Useful when you want more bearing or fixing surface on one face than the other, or when the angle has to sit inside a lip or rebate.
What we actually stock
These are the sizes on the shelf, not a generic catalogue. Every one of them can be bought in a full 6.5 metre length or cut to your sizes.

Alloy and finish
Our angle is 6060 T5 in mill finish. It is the standard architectural and general-fabrication temper: clean extruded surface, easy to cut, drill, bend and weld, and naturally corrosion resistant without any coating. Custom powder coating is available on angle if you want colour — it is a made-to-order service with a setup charge per colour, per order.
What people use it for
- Brackets and cleats — cut to length, drill two holes, done. Easily the most common use.
- Frames and edging — light frames for enclosures, covers, guards, doors and trays.
- Shelf and corner supports — angle takes a shelf edge neatly and adds stiffness to a corner.
- Trailers, utes and canopies — it does not rust, which is why it ends up outdoors and on the road so often.
- Architectural trim — edge protection, tile and render stops, and finishing detail.
Our honest note on strength
We do not publish load ratings or span limits for aluminium angle, and you should be wary of anyone who does. There are two reasons, and both are practical rather than legal.
First, aluminium bends long before it breaks. On any span worth talking about, what decides whether a job is acceptable is deflection — how much it sags — not the point at which the metal fails. A number worked out from strength alone can be several times too generous for real use.
Second, in most builds the joint is the weak point, not the section. Bolt spacing, edge distance, what it is fixed to and how — those decide the outcome far more than the wall thickness you picked off a table.
So if your job carries weight, has people under it, or has to satisfy anyone official, get it specified by someone qualified to do that. Then send us the spec and we will cut exactly what it says, to the millimetre. For brackets, frames, trim and general fabrication, pick the size that suits the fixings and the look, and go.
Cut to size, from Hallam
Every angle above can be ordered cut to your lengths. Enter your sizes on the product page and AluCut Optimiser works out the fewest 6.5 metre lengths that cover the job, shows you the cutting layout, and prices it before you commit. Keep your offcuts with the order at no charge, or leave them with us.
Each profile has a minimum order, shown on its own product page, and the smallest single cut piece we can do is 40mm. Most cut-to-size orders are ready in 1–3 business days for pickup from Hallam, or delivery across Melbourne.
